Toprak-Kala is an archaeological ruin of a fortified city in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, located in the lower Amu Darya region. The site dates to the early centuries of the Common Era and was an important urban centre in ancient Khorezm.
Excavations have exposed large mudbrick walls, the remains of a palace complex and fragments of painted plaster and stucco decorative work. Finds at the site illustrate urban planning and elite architecture in the Khorezm region during the 1st to 4th centuries CE.
Toprak-Kala was a regional administrative and ceremonial centre in antiquity and its ruins provide evidence for local craft production and artistic traditions. The site has been excavated in the 20th century by archaeological teams and remains an important source for studies of Central Asian antiquity.
