Toompea

Toompea is a limestone hill and historic district within the medieval Old Town of Tallinn, Estonia, that has long been the seat of political power in the city. The elevated plateau contains a castle complex and significant religious and governmental buildings, and forms a distinct element of Tallinn’s UNESCO-listed historic centre.

Prominent visitor sites on Toompea include Toompea Castle, which stands on the hilltop and today houses the Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament), and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a late 19th century Orthodox cathedral notable for its domes and interior frescoes. The area also features terraces and viewpoints that look down over the lower town’s red-roofed streets and the harbour.

The hill has fortified and administrative uses dating back to medieval times, with successive construction phases by local rulers and foreign powers shaping the castle and defensive works. Architectural changes over centuries reflect Toompea’s ongoing role as the civic and symbolic high point of Tallinn.

Toompea sits within Tallinn’s Old Town, a short walk from the port and the lower town across the so-called ‘Toompea ditch’. It is centrally located in the city and is commonly reached on foot from nearby squares and streets of the historic centre.
