Tomioka Silk Mill
Museum Industrial heritage silk mill and Japan's modernization symbol
A Meiji‑era silk reeling mill in Gunma and a UNESCO World Heritage site illustrating Japan’s industrial modernization. Visitors tour preserved buildings and exhibits on early factory technology.
Tomioka Silk Mill is a 19th-century silk-reeling factory in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, established in 1872 as a state-supported model for modern silk production. It is notable for its preserved industrial buildings and early adoption of mechanised reeling techniques.
The site contains the original multi-storey brick mill and several timber production halls where reeling and testing machinery are displayed. Exhibits include preserved machines, interpretive panels, and examples of silk products, suitable for a short focused visit of about 1-2 hours. The complex also includes managers’ residences and workers’ housing that illustrate workplace organisation and daily life around the mill.
Built by the Japanese government in 1872 to introduce mechanised silk-reeling and raise export quality, the mill served as a model for industrial silk production in Meiji Japan. The complex continued in industrial use into the 20th century and has since been conserved and opened to the public as a heritage site.
The mill complex sits in Tomioka city in Gunma Prefecture, in the north-central part of Honshu. It is accessible by road and local rail from Takasaki and other regional centres.
- Visitor note: Open-air displays and restored machinery are concentrated in a compact site suitable for a 1-2 hour visit; guided tours and interpretive panels explain silk-reeling steps.
- World Heritage status: Inscribed as part of a World Heritage listing in 2014 for its role as a model modern industrial facility in Meiji-era Japan.
