Tombs of the Kings
Archaeological Site Ancient rock-cut tombs near Paphos archaeological park
Near Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings are rock‑cut Hellenistic and Roman burial chambers set in an archaeological park; visitors walk the sunlit courtyards and inspect carved facades and subterranean rooms.
The Tombs of the Kings is a large ancient necropolis on the outskirts of Paphos, Cyprus, containing rock-cut underground tombs dating to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The site forms part of the Paphos Archaeological Park and is an important archaeological attraction in the region.
A network of subterranean tomb-chambers and house-like burial monuments is carved directly into the coastal limestone, many with Doric-columned facades, carved chambers and burial benches. Tomb architecture ranges in size and complexity and visitors can walk through several accessible chambers.
The necropolis was used from the Hellenistic through the Roman era, serving affluent families and officials of the Paphian city; archaeological work in the 20th century exposed many of the tombs visible today. The area has been managed as an archaeological park to protect and interpret the remains.
The site lies on the northern outskirts of modern Paphos, a short drive from the harbour and town centre, and is easily reached from the coastal tourist area and from the city’s archaeological attractions.
- Name misnomer: Although called 'Tombs of the Kings', most graves belonged to high-ranking officials and wealthy citizens rather than monarchs; the name is a historical misnomer.
- Practical tip: The site is largely open-air with many unshaded sections carved into bedrock, so bring sun protection and sturdy shoes when visiting.
