Tomb of Sher Shah Suri

The Tomb of Sher Shah Suri is a 16th-century funerary complex in Sasaram, Bihar, built for the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri. The monument is a large, octagonal masonry mausoleum set on a raised platform and is surrounded by a water tank and landscaped grounds.

Construction of the tomb was completed under Sher Shah’s successors during the mid 1500s; the design shows Afghan and Indo-Islamic architectural influences with monumental scale and formal geometry. The site served both as a dynastic mausoleum and as a demonstration of state power.

The complex includes the central octagonal tomb, gateways, and causeways crossing the surrounding tank, giving the mausoleum an island-like presentation. The structure remains one of the most important mid-16th-century monuments in the region.

The tomb is located in Sasaram in Rohtas district, Bihar, and functions as a major local heritage destination.
