Tomb of Pope Alexander VII

The Tomb of Pope Alexander VII is the funerary monument for Pope Fabio Chigi (Alexander VII) located inside St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. It was conceived and executed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his workshop in the 17th century.

A large sculptural tomb set against a wall of the basilica featuring a kneeling figure of the pope under an elaborate canopy and a sculptural group of allegorical figures. A bronze skeletal figure representing Death holds an hourglass and contrasts with the white marble figures, producing a vivid Baroque composition.

Commissioned after the pope’s death the monument was produced in the decades following Alexander VII’s papacy and completed by Bernini’s studio in the later 17th century. It serves as the papal tomb and has remained in place within the basilica since its installation.

Situated inside St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, the tomb is accessed as part of normal circulation through the basilica and is viewed among other major funerary monuments and chapels within the church.
