The Governor’s Palace (Palazzo del Governatorato) is the principal administrative building of the Governorate of Vatican City State. It contains offices that manage civil administration within the Vatican.

The building is used for governance and administrative functions rather than as a public museum; most areas are closed to casual visitors. Its exterior and surrounding plazas are visible from public areas near St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Governorate and its palace were established following the creation of the modern Vatican City State in 1929 and have served as the seat of the civil administration since then.

The palace is located within Vatican City near St. Peter’s Square and the central religious and administrative core of the city-state.

• Function and access: Houses the administrative offices of the Governorate of Vatican City State and other Vatican administrative services; it is not generally open for public tours.

The Governor’s Palace (Palazzo del Governatorato) is inside Vatican City adjacent to St. Peter’s Square. From central Rome take Metro line A to Ottaviano-San Pietro-Musei Vaticani station; from there it is about a 10-15 minute walk (around 800-1,000 m) to St. Peter’s Square and the palace. Several Rome city buses and tourist bus routes also stop on roads around the Vatican.

By car the Vatican is only a few kilometres west of Rome’s historical centre; driving times are short but traffic and restricted access around the Vatican mean walking or public transport is usually faster.

• View the Governor's Palace from Via della Conciliazione or St. Peter's Square in the early morning when the square is least crowded; the building is administrative and its exterior is the main point of interest for visitors.
• Prioritize photographing architectural details on the façade and adjacent structures before larger tour groups and photographers arrive - many visitors only focus on St. Peter's Basilica and miss the Governorate's signage and stonework.
