The Tomb of Askia is a large mud-brick funerary complex in Gao, Mali, built to commemorate Askia Mohammad I of the Songhai Empire. It is an earthen pyramidal structure with an attached mosque and was constructed in the late 15th century.
The complex served as a royal mausoleum and a religious center, combining funerary and Islamic architectural elements in mud-brick form. It remains a focal point for local religious observances and is maintained using traditional building techniques.
The tomb was commissioned by Askia Mohammad I around 1495 during the height of the Songhai Empire and has been preserved through community and conservation efforts since then. It forms part of Gao’s historic core and is included in lists of significant Sahelian earthen monuments.
