Tomb of Ahmad Sanjar

The Tomb of Ahmad Sanjar is the mausoleum of the Seljuk sultan Ahmad Sanjar, located in the Merv oasis area of present-day Mary Province, Turkmenistan. It is an important surviving example of medieval Seljuk funerary architecture.

The brick mausoleum’s scale and decorative brickwork draw interest from students of Islamic architecture and history, and the building is frequently viewed as a high point in the archaeological landscape of Merv. The structure’s monumental form and dome are distinctive features.

Built in the 12th century as the burial place for Sultan Ahmad Sanjar, the mausoleum belonged to a broader Seljuk-era urban and ceremonial complex. Over centuries the site survived in varying states of repair and is now part of the archaeological remains associated with ancient Merv.
