How to Get to Tokushima
Tokushima is reached directly by Tokushima Awaodori Airport (TKS) and by rail at JR Tokushima Station, the main gateway for trains on the JR Kōtoku Line. Many visitors also arrive via Takamatsu Airport (TAK) or by highway bus from Kansai/Osaka and then transfer to local trains or buses into the city.
Tokushima Awaodori Airport (TKS): The airport is about 8-10 km northwest of central Tokushima. From the airport an airport shuttle bus (Awaodori Airport Limousine) runs to JR Tokushima Station in around 25 minutes; typical one-way fare is about ¥600. Taxis take roughly 20-30 minutes to the station or city centre and cost around ¥3,000-¥4,000 depending on traffic.
Takamatsu Airport (TAK): Takamatsu is on neighbouring Kagawa Prefecture and is a convenient alternative when flying into Shikoku. Take the airport bus to Takamatsu Station (about 35-40 minutes, roughly ¥600-¥800), then catch the JR Uzushio limited express to JR Tokushima Station (about 55-70 minutes, typical fare including limited‑express supplement around ¥1,700-¥2,200). This combination is often faster than routing through Honshu airports if flights are available to TAK.
Train: JR Tokushima Station is the city’s rail hub on the JR Kōtoku Line. The Uzushio limited express links Tokushima with Takamatsu and Okayama - Takamatsu is about 55-70 minutes away, Okayama around 2 hours depending on connections; expect fares in the low thousands of yen for limited‑express trips and a few hundred yen for short local hops. Local JR and private lines are the best option for regional travel; buy tickets at station machines or use an IC card where accepted.
Bus: Tokushima is well served by local buses (Tokushima Bus and other operators) for getting around the city and nearby towns; most urban fares are flat or distance‑based and typically range from about ¥200-¥500 per ride. Long‑distance highway buses link Tokushima with Osaka, Kobe and Kansai Airport (travel times 2.5-4 hours depending on route) with fares commonly ¥2,000-¥4,000; operators include JR Shikoku bus services and private highway carriers.
How to Get Around Tokushima
Tokushima is compact enough that trains, local buses and walking cover most city sightseeing; for regional destinations use the JR Uzushio limited express or highway buses. If you want to reach remote attractions (Iya Valley, rural onsen) a rental car is the most practical choice - otherwise rely on buses and trains and expect less frequent service outside peak hours.
- JR Kōtoku Line & Uzushio Limited Express (¥300-¥2,200) - JR Tokushima Station is the rail hub; the Uzushio limited express connects Tokushima with Takamatsu and Okayama and is the fastest way to reach neighbouring cities. Trains are punctual and comfortable - reserve seats for busy periods (weekends/holidays) to avoid standing. Expect limited‑express fares in the low thousands of yen and local fares of a few hundred yen for short hops.
- Local buses (Tokushima Bus and others) (¥200-¥500) - Local buses cover the city centre, suburbs and tourist spots (including routes toward Naruto and the Iya area). Fares are typically flat or distance‑based; use exact change or IC cards where accepted. Buses are the most practical public option for spots not served by rail, but check timetables - service can be less frequent evenings and weekends.
- Highway buses (¥2,000-¥4,000) - Highway (express) buses connect Tokushima with Osaka, Kobe and Kansai Airport and are often cheaper than trains for longer distances. Travel times vary (roughly 2.5-4 hours to Kansai/Osaka) and fares typically range from about ¥2,000-¥4,000. Buses are comfortable for overnight or budget travel and can drop you close to JR Tokushima Station or major bus terminals.
- Taxis (¥600-¥3,500) - Taxis are plentiful around JR Tokushima Station and convenient for short trips, late‑night travel or heavy luggage; they are metered and safe. A short trip in the city centre will typically cost several hundred to a few thousand yen; expect higher fares for longer journeys and when traveling from the airport. Ask drivers to use the meter; many accept cash only.
- Car rental (¥6,000-¥12,000/day) - Renting a car is the most flexible way to explore rural Tokushima Prefecture (Iya Valley, remote onsen, coastal roads). Roads are well‑maintained but mountain routes can be narrow; parking in Tokushima city is generally available but can add cost. Rental daily rates vary by season but typically start around several thousand yen per day, plus tolls and fuel.
- Bicycle rental (¥300-¥1,500/day) - Central Tokushima is compact enough for cycling - several rental shops and some hotels offer bikes for short trips. Cycling is pleasant for sightseeing along rivers and into nearby neighbourhoods; be cautious on busier roads and use designated bike parking. Prices are modest, often from a few hundred yen per hour to a small daily fee.
- Walking - Walking is the best way to explore Tokushima's city centre, downtown shopping streets and riverfront at a relaxed pace. Many attractions, restaurants and shops are clustered within a few kilometres of JR Tokushima Station, so comfortable shoes and a map are all you need.
