The island’s shoreline includes sandy bays and sheltered beaches with coral reefs close to shore, making it a frequent day-trip destination from Okinawa’s main island. Marine activities and beach recreation are the island’s primary attractions.

Small settlements and basic visitor facilities are concentrated near the principal beaches; local operators provide snorkeling and boat trips during the main tourist season.

Tokashiki lies to the west of Okinawa’s main island within Okinawa Prefecture and is commonly reached by ferry from Naha; it forms part of the Kerama archipelago and marine protected area.

  • Ferry connections: Regular ferries and high-speed boats operate from Naha to Tokashiki, with crossing times from about 35 to 60 minutes depending on vessel type and schedule.
  • Marine park: The island is within the Kerama Islands and is part of the Kerama National Park marine area, noted for clear water and coral communities.

How to Get to Tokashiki Island #

From Naha: Regular ferries and high-speed boats depart from Tomari Port (Naha). High-speed ferries take about 35-50 minutes; conventional ferries take around 70-90 minutes. Ferries run more frequently in summer and on weekends. From the port in Tokashiki, Aharen Beach is a short taxi ride or a 15-20 minute walk.

Tips for Visiting Tokashiki Island #

  • Catch the earliest ferry from Tomari Port (Naha) to avoid afternoon wind and day-trip crowding.
  • Bring a mask and snorkel - waters off Aharen Beach are clearer at low wind; boats to neighboring uninhabited islands leave from Aharen.
  • If staying overnight, book a minshuku/guesthouse in advance in high season (July-August).
  • Walk the ridge behind Aharen at golden hour for sparse viewpoints; the road network is short but steep - taxis are limited after sunset.
