Historical Site Historic wine landscape producing famed sweet dessert wines

The Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape in northeastern Hungary centred on the town of Tokaj and surrounding vineyard slopes. It is noted for a long history of viticulture and a distinctive system of terraced vineyards and cellar practices linked to production of Tokaji wines.

Visitors encounter planted slopes, partitioned vineyard parcels and village settlements with historic cellars used for ageing and storing wine. The area is defined by its combination of natural slopes, river confluences and man-made vineyard layout that supports production of botrytised sweet wines.

Viticulture in the Tokaj area developed over many centuries; the landscape and technical practices evolved to produce the region’s signature wines, and many of the vineyards and cellars retain features dating to the early modern period and later.

The region lies in northeastern Hungary around the confluence of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers and includes a number of historic wine towns and vineyard sites.

  • Tokaji Aszú: The region is noted for Tokaji Aszú sweet wines produced from botrytised grapes and long-established fermentation and ageing practices preserved across villages and cellars.
