Tōfuku-ji Temple

Tōfuku-ji is a major Zen Buddhist temple complex in southeastern Kyoto, Japan, founded in 1236 and associated with the Rinzai school. The complex is noted for its large wooden gate, refined temple gardens and strong seasonal displays of maple foliage.

Visitors come for architectural features such as the temple’s historic Sanmon gate, the long bridge and viewing walkway often called Tsutenkyo, and several rock and moss gardens that illustrate modern restorations of Zen garden design. The Tsutenkyo promenade is especially well known for autumn colours.

The temple was established in the early 13th century by prominent patrons and developed as a major monastic centre within Kyoto; over time it has undergone restorations and garden redesigns while maintaining its role as a functioning temple complex.

Tōfuku-ji stands in the southeastern part of Kyoto city, a short distance from Kyoto Station and accessible by local rail and bus services, set among urban streets and neighbouring temple precincts.

• Best time to visit: Peak autumn colours typically occur in mid to late November in Kyoto; the Tsutenkyo bridge is the primary vantage point for the maple displays at the temple.
• Access and location: The temple is part of Kyoto's cluster of historic Zen temples and is easily reached from Kyoto's rail network, close to Tofukuji Station.

What to See #

• Sanmon gate: The large two-storey wooden **Sanmon** gate at the temple entrance, one of the oldest major temple gates in Japan and a focal viewpoint for architecture and seasonal foliage.
• Tsutenkyo bridge and viewing walk: A long covered walkway and bridge often called the Tsutenkyo, lined by maple trees that provide famous autumn views over the temple precincts.
• Hojo gardens and rock gardens: The Hojo and associated Zen gardens redesigned in the 20th century, featuring rock placements, moss and minimalist planting typical of Zen garden design.
