How to Get to Tofino#
Tofino is best reached by a short regional flight to Tofino/Long Beach Airport (YAZ) or by driving/ferry across Vancouver Island. Once there, the town and nearby attractions are compact but many highlights are spread out along the Pacific Rim.
Tofino/Long Beach Airport (YAZ): Tofino has a small regional airport with scheduled flights from Vancouver (YVR) and Nanaimo (YCD) - flight time from Vancouver is about 35-50 minutes. From YAZ the town centre is roughly 5-10 minutes by taxi or shuttle; expect taxi/shuttle fares around CAD 20-35 per person.
Vancouver International Airport (YVR): Many visitors fly into Vancouver then take a short connecting flight to Tofino (YAZ) or drive/ferry via Nanaimo. Driving and ferry options from Vancouver to Tofino take significantly longer (allow a full day including ferry and highway driving) but are popular for those with vehicles.
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Tofino. The closest rail services run on Vancouver Island only as part of VIA Rail to some mainland destinations; most visitors use road or air connections.
Bus/Ferry: The usual land route is ferry from Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to Nanaimo (Departure Bay), then drive Highway 4 across Vancouver Island to Tofino (approx 3-3.5 hours from Nanaimo including driving). Regional shuttle operators link Nanaimo or Parksville to Tofino and are a common choice for travellers without cars.
How to Get Around Tofino#
A regional flight to YAZ saves many hours of driving and is preferred by most visitors; if you prefer to drive, combine BC Ferries with Highway 4 across Vancouver Island. Once in Tofino, shuttles, bikes and walking cover most local travel needs.
