Tō-ji is a historic Shingon Buddhist temple in southern Kyoto, founded in 796 and closely associated with the monk Kūkai (Kobo Daishi). The temple is an important religious site and part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
The temple’s large wooden structures and its landmark five-storey pagoda, the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan, plus the main hall and accompanying precincts. The site is also known for a monthly market on the 21st that attracts local visitors.
Tō-ji was established shortly after the capital moved to Heian-kyō (Kyoto) and became a major centre for Shingon Buddhism; its precincts and buildings have been rebuilt and restored over the centuries. The present layout preserves medieval and early modern fabric important to the temple’s religious history.
The temple lies just south of Kyoto Station in Kyoto Prefecture, within easy walking distance of the station and the city’s southern neighbourhoods.

How to Get to Tō-ji Temple #
Tō-ji temple is immediately south of Kyoto Station. From JR Kyoto Station’s south exit it’s about a 10-15 minute walk; alternatively take the Kintetsu Kyoto Line one stop to Tōji Station and it’s a 1-2 minute walk from that station. Several city buses also stop near Kyoto Station with short walks to the temple, making it very accessible from around the city.
Tips for Visiting Tō-ji Temple #
- Visit early in the morning to enjoy the five-story pagoda with far fewer people and to photograph it framed against the clear skyline near Kyoto Station.
- If you can, plan your trip for the 21st of the month to experience Tō-ji's famous Kōbō-san flea market - it gets crowded but is the best time to see local antiques and street-food stalls.
- Don't miss walking the temple grounds slowly to spot smaller sub-temples and the temple's historic wooden structures; check opening and ticket times at the gate before you arrive.

Best at cherry blossom time (late March-April) and in autumn for foliage, though both periods bring larger crowds.
