How to Get to Tiwanaku
Tiwanaku is a short road trip west of La Paz (El Alto airport) and is commonly visited as a day trip. Most visitors go by shared minibus, colectivo or guided tour from La Paz.
El Alto / La Paz (LPB): The nearest major airport for Tiwanaku is El Alto (LPB) serving La Paz. From El Alto/La Paz the archaeological site at Tiwanaku (Tiahuanaco) is reached by road in roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic.
Juliaca / Puno (Peru): Cross‑border itineraries sometimes approach Tiwanaku from southern Peru, but La Paz remains the usual Bolivian gateway.
Train: There is no passenger rail to Tiwanaku.
Bus / Road: Regular minibuses and tourist colectivos run from La Paz to Tiwanaku (often departing from the Alto or central La Paz terminals). The drive is about 1-1.5 hours; expect local fares in the low Boliviano range for shared transport and higher prices for private transfers or guided tours.

Tiwanaku is best visited as a day trip from La Paz by bus or organized tour; colectivos and tourist buses run from the city. The archaeological complex itself is walkable on foot and compact enough for a few hours of exploration.
