Tissø

Tissø is a freshwater lake on the island of Zealand in Denmark, known both for its natural setting and for substantial archaeological finds from the Iron Age and Viking Age. The name and surrounding landscape have long-standing cultural and historical associations.

Around the lake visitors find open shorelines for walking and birdwatching and a local museum that displays artifacts from a nearby archaeological complex interpreted as a large magnate estate from the early medieval period. The archaeological work has revealed structural and material evidence dating to the Iron Age and Viking Age.

The lakeshore and its adjacent exhibits were developed to connect natural recreation with interpretation of Denmark’s prehistoric and early historic past. The site is managed for both conservation and cultural heritage presentation.

Tissø lies in west-central Zealand, roughly 70 to 90 kilometres west of Copenhagen, set amid farmland and small towns in the Zealand region.
