Tintagel Castle is a ruined medieval fortification on a rocky headland on the north coast of Cornwall, England, famed for its dramatic coastal position and association with Arthurian legend. The site comprises cliff-top masonry and archaeological remains set above steep sea cliffs.
The cliff-top castle ruins, sea-facing viewpoints and the newly installed footbridge that connects the headland to the offshore island rock. The site also features a visitor centre with interpretation about the medieval castle and earlier settlements.
A medieval castle was constructed on the headland in the 13th century; archaeological investigation has also revealed earlier post-Roman and medieval occupation layers that underpin the site’s long history. The castle and headland fell into ruin over later centuries and are now managed as a heritage site.
