Tillya Tepe
Archaeological Site Archaeological burial site famed for spectacular Bactrian gold
Tillya Tepe in northern Afghanistan is the 1978 burial complex where richly worked gold objects were recovered; it interests archaeologists and historians of Central Asian nomadic and regional interaction.
Tillya Tepe is an archaeological burial complex in Jowzjan Province, Afghanistan, famous for a group of richly furnished graves excavated in the late 20th century. The site produced a substantial assemblage of gold and jewellery that has been central to studies of Central Asian elite burials.
Excavations uncovered several burial mounds containing gold crowns, ornaments, and richly decorated artifacts that combine Hellenistic, Iranian, and nomadic steppe stylistic elements. The finds are often dated to the late Hellenistic to early Kushan period, around the turn of the first century CE.
The burials were excavated by a Soviet-Afghan archaeological team in 1978, and the material became internationally known as an extraordinary example of early Common Era Central Asian elite burial practice.
Tillya Tepe is located in northern Afghanistan near the regional center of Sheberghan in Jowzjan Province; the site is primarily of archaeological interest rather than a developed tourist destination.
