Til Barsip

Til Barsip is an ancient archaeological site on the east bank of the Euphrates River in northern Syria, occupied in the Bronze and Iron Ages and later incorporated into the Assyrian state. The site preserves an urban mound with visible remains of fortifications, public buildings and domestic structures.

Visitors and researchers focus on the tell and its traces of city walls, palace remains and pottery sequences that document long-term occupation. The site contains material evidence for Aramean and Assyrian administrative presence and regional trade.

In the Iron Age the site was taken and integrated into the Assyrian empire; Assyrian sources record that it was renamed Kar-Shalmaneser following resettlement under Assyrian rulers in the 8th century BCE. Over subsequent centuries the site saw changing control and phases of construction and reuse.

Til Barsip lies on the Euphrates floodplain in Aleppo Governorate, Syria, occupying a raised tell beside agricultural land and river course. It is near other ancient frontier sites on the middle Euphrates.
