How to Get to Tihany
Tihany peninsula is most often reached via Budapest by train to Balatonfüred and a short bus or taxi to Tihany, or via the seasonal Hévíz-Balaton airport. Trains plus a short local bus provide a reliable, low-cost route.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International (BUD): Budapest is the main international airport for reaching Lake Balaton and Tihany. From BUD take bus 100E to the city centre (≈35-45 minutes, ticket price around 900 HUF) then a train from Budapest (Nyugati or Kelenföld) to Balatonfüred (1.5-2 hours, regional fares often 1,500-2,500 HUF); from Balatonfüred a local bus or taxi reaches Tihany in about 10-20 minutes.
Sármellék / Hévíz-Balaton Airport (SOB): Hévíz-Balaton is the closest small airport (seasonal). From there you’ll need a shuttle or taxi to the Balaton north shore and then a short bus to Tihany (travel time varies by connection).
Train: Trains from Budapest to Balatonfüred or nearby stations (e.g., Balatonfüred, Balatonalmádi) are frequent in high season; regional fares are affordable and travel time from Budapest is about 1.5-2 hours.
Bus: Local buses connect Balatonfüred with Tihany and run multiple times daily; in summer frequency increases and buses take 10-20 minutes from Balatonfüred to Tihany.
