How to Get to Siófok#
Siófok on Lake Balaton is primarily reached via Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport (BUD) or by rail/bus from Budapest. Siófok railway station sits on the main Budapest-Balaton line and provides frequent InterCity and regional connections, especially during the summer season.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD): The main international gateway for Siófok. From the airport take the City Airport Train or airport shuttle into Budapest centre (about 30-40 minutes, prices vary by operator), then continue to Siófok by rail or bus.
Hévíz-Balaton Airport / Sármellék (SOB): A smaller seasonal airport near Lake Balaton with limited flights. From Sármellék the easiest onward option is a taxi or pre-booked transfer to Siófok (road journey roughly 40-60 minutes) since public connections are infrequent outside peak season.
Train: Siófok is a major stop on the Budapest-Somogy-Balaton corridor (MÁV). Trains depart Budapest (usually from Nyugati or Kelenföld) and take about 1.5-2 hours to Siófok; InterCity and regional services both call there. Tickets are sold on the MÁV website and at stations; booking in advance can save money.
Bus: Volánbusz coaches and regional buses link Budapest and other towns to Siófok; travel time is typically around 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. Buses drop you close to the centre and the harbour, useful when travelling with large luggage in summer.
How to Get Around Siófok#
For most visitors trains from Budapest are the easiest and most predictable way to reach Siófok; buses are flexible when train times are sparse. In summer, extra services, bike rentals and local shuttles make getting around the lakeshore straightforward.
- MÁV InterCity / regional train (~1,500-3,500 HUF) - The most convenient and reliable way to get to Siófok from Budapest and other Hungarian cities. Trains stop at Siófok station near the town centre and ferry/harbour area. In summer there are extra services-buy tickets on the MÁV app or at stations.
- Volánbusz / regional coach (~1,000-2,500 HUF) - Frequent coaches run between Budapest and Siófok; buses are a solid option if train times don’t match. Coaches arrive near the centre and harbour. Prices can be slightly lower than InterCity trains but journeys are more affected by road traffic.
- Airport transfer / shuttle (from SOB) (~8,000-20,000 HUF (taxi/transfer depending on vehicle)) - Seasonal flights into Hévíz-Balaton (Sármellék) often require a taxi or pre-booked transfer to Siófok. Transfers are door-to-door and more reliable than limited public services outside summer; share a transfer if possible to reduce cost.
- Taxi / Rideshare (~8,000-25,000 HUF) - Useful for late arrivals or direct transfers to accommodation; expect higher fares in peak summer. Metered taxis operate, and local apps or hotel-arranged transfers are common for tourists.
- Bicycle / e-bike rental (~1,500-4,000 HUF/day) - Siófok and the southern shore of Lake Balaton are very popular for cycling; rentals are easy to find and a pleasant way to explore lakeside promenades and nearby villages.
