Tiferet Yisrael Synagogue

Tiferet Yisrael Synagogue is a historic synagogue in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City, established in the 19th century as a major communal house of worship. It was one of the principal synagogues in the Jewish Quarter prior to mid-20th century conflict.

The building was a large, domed synagogue that served the local community for prayer and communal events before being damaged and largely destroyed during the 1948 fighting in Jerusalem. Ruins of the synagogue remained and in recent decades there have been archaeological work and restoration efforts on the site.

The synagogue was constructed by the local Jewish community in the 19th century and functioned as an active house of worship until the 1948 war when the Old City changed hands and many buildings were damaged. Post-1948 the site lay in ruins until archaeological stabilization and partial reconstruction began in later decades.

The site is in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, within the municipal Jerusalem District. It lies among narrow historic streets and adjacent to other major religious and archaeological sites in the Old City.
