Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago at the southern tip of South America, divided between Chile and Argentina and including the large central island known as Isla Grande. It is characterized by rugged mountains, subantarctic forests, peat bogs, and a deeply indented coastline.

Geographically it occupies the southernmost part of the South American landmass, separated from the Antarctic by the Drake Passage and bordering the Strait of Magellan to the north; principal population centres are Ushuaia (Argentina) and Porvenir (Chile).

How to Get to Tierra del Fuego #
Tierra del Fuego (Chilean side) is most commonly reached via Punta Arenas, the nearest major city. From Punta Arenas drive to the ferry terminal and take the ferry across the Strait of Magellan to Porvenir on Tierra del Fuego (ferry services operate regularly); once in Porvenir you can continue by road to other parts of the island.
Tips for Visiting Tierra del Fuego #
- Visit Tierra del Fuego in the Southern Hemisphere summer (roughly November-March) when daylight is longest and most services run; plan overland and sea connections well in advance because weather-related delays are common.
- If you want to access the Chilean side, plan your approach via Punta Arenas and the Punta Arenas-Porvenir ferry (schedules vary seasonally) rather than assuming Ushuaia is the only gateway-allow extra time for ferry crossings and transfers.
