Tiergarten is a large central park in the heart of Berlin, established from historic hunting grounds and now covering roughly 210 hectares as a public urban park. It functions as the city’s principal large green space west of the Brandenburg Gate.

The park contains broad lawns, mature trees, formal avenues and water features, and hosts memorials, statues and recreational amenities. The Victory Column sits on an axial plaza inside the park and is a well-known viewpoint.

Originally part of the Electors’ hunting grounds from the 16th century, it was landscaped in the 18th and 19th centuries and later adapted after wartime damage in the 20th century. The park has long served both leisure and ceremonial functions in Berlin.

Tiergarten occupies a central position in Berlin’s Mitte/Charlottenburg area, bounded by major boulevards and adjacent to landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate, with multiple U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations providing access.

What to See#

• Großer Tiergarten: A large central park area known as the Großer Tiergarten covers the main lawns, woodlands and water features and is the historical core of Berlin’s parkland.
• Victory Column (Siegessäule): The Victory Column (Siegessäule) stands on a raised plaza within the park and offers a panoramic viewpoint reached by climbing an internal staircase.
• Café am Neuen See: The Café am Neuen See is a lakeside refreshment spot frequently used by visitors in warmer months and located near the park’s western pathways.

Tiergarten lies in central Berlin and is within walking distance of several major stations. Take S‑Bahn to Zoologischer Garten or Berlin Hauptbahnhof, or U‑bahn to Potsdamer Platz (U2); from any of those you can enter the park on foot within a few minutes. The park is also well served by numerous city buses.

• Enter from the east at Brandenburg Gate/Strasse des 17. Juni if you want to visit memorials and monuments first; for a quieter stroll use the southern entrances near Potsdamer Platz or along the Landwehr Canal to avoid the busiest stretches.
• Visit on weekday mornings to enjoy much of the park's 210 hectares before weekend leisure crowds and events arrive; mornings are also best for photographing the formal avenues and hidden sculptures in softer light.
• Don't skip the park's off-path memorials and planted gardens - the Soviet War Memorial, the Rose Garden, and small commemorative sites are easy to miss if you stick to the central promenades.
