Tidal Basin

The Tidal Basin is a man-made inlet in West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., created as part of the city’s Potomac waterfront improvements and noted for its setting among national memorials and cherry trees. It functions as an estuarial basin connected to the Potomac River and the Washington Channel.

Key sights around the basin include the Jefferson Memorial on the southern shore, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial along the eastern side and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the western bank. The basin’s shore is ringed by walking paths and thousands of cherry trees that were first gifted by Tokyo in 1912 and draw large crowds during the spring bloom.

The basin was engineered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to help regulate tidal flow in the Washington Channel and to create a formal waterfront for the National Mall precinct. Its tree-lined loop and memorials make it a primary recreational and commemorative landscape for the capital.

Situated in West Potomac Park, the Tidal Basin lies immediately southwest of the National Mall in central Washington, D.C., within walking distance of the U.S. Capitol and other central federal landmarks.
