Tiburón Island (Isla Tiburón) is the largest island in the Gulf of California and the largest island of Mexico, located off the coast of Sonora. The island is sparsely populated and notable for its desert interior and coastal ecosystems.

It is part of the Seri people’s traditional territory and is included within conservation and biosphere reserve designations that protect native flora and fauna. As a result, access is regulated and most visits are organized with local authorities or community representatives.

Historically the island has been used seasonally and sporadically by indigenous communities and for limited pastoral and fishing activities; modern conservation status emphasizes ecological protection.

Geographically it lies in the Gulf of California off the Sonora coast, separated from the mainland by a narrow channel and visible from coastal points in central Sonora.

  • Access and protection: Designated as a protected area, the island is largely uninhabited and forms part of the traditional territory of the Seri people; visits typically require coordination and permits.

How to Get to Tiburón Island #

Isla Tiburón (Tiburón Island) is reached by boat from the Sonoran coast; the traditional embarkation point is the Seri village of Punta Chueca (near Bahía de Kino area). Access normally requires arranging transport and permission with the Seri community or an authorised tour operator; boat crossings are typically tens of minutes depending on landing point and sea conditions. Large parts of the island are protected, so confirm permits and boat arrangements before travel.

Tips for Visiting Tiburón Island #

  • Access to Isla Tiburón is controlled by the Seri community - you must go with an approved Seri guide/operator departing from Punta Chueca or another Seri-run gateway, so arrange permission or a tour in advance.
  • Travel in the cooler months (fall through spring) to avoid the harshest desert heat; services on the mainland departure points are limited, so book transportation and any overnight plans ahead.
  • Respect Seri rules and cultural sites while on the island: guided visits focus on natural and cultural interpretation, and staying with an authorized operator is the only lawful way to see the island's landscapes and archaeological points of interest.
