The Tian Shan is a major mountain system in Central Asia stretching across multiple countries and forming a key geographic backbone of the region. The range contains numerous high peaks, extensive glaciers and alpine plateaus, and plays a central role in regional climate and hydrology.

High-altitude mountaineering, multi-day trekking and glacier travel are primary attractions; specific highlights include glaciated peaks over 7,400 metres, long glacier valleys and alpine lakes such as those around Issyk-Kul. Many passes and high-altitude routes are historically important as transits and today are used by climbers and trekkers.

Geologically the Tian Shan arose from Cenozoic tectonic uplift and continues to be shaped by active tectonics and glaciation. Human use of the ranges has included seasonal pastoralism for centuries and, more recently, mountaineering, tourism and scientific glaciological study.

The Tian Shan spans eastern Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, northern Tajikistan, southeastern Kazakhstan and western China. Its high central sectors lie in Kyrgyzstan and western China, with the best-known high peaks concentrated along the central spine.

  • Scale: The range extends for roughly 2,800 kilometres across Central Asia and contains peaks that exceed 7,400 metres in elevation.
  • Water resources: Glaciated high altitudes and long running valleys make the Tian Shan a major source of freshwater for downstream river systems across several countries.

What to See #

  • Central Tian Shan: The Central Tian Shan including the ranges around Jengish Chokusu (Pik Pobeda) and the high glacier fields of eastern Kyrgyzstan and adjacent China.

  • Northern and Western subranges: The Zailiysky and Ile-Alatau ranges on the northwestern fringe, which descend toward Kazakhstan and contain ski areas and mountain towns.
