Thomas Edison National Historical Park

Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange, New Jersey, preserves Thomas Edison’s laboratory complex and his adjacent home, Glenmont. The site documents Edison’s inventive work and domestic life during his most productive years.

The preserved laboratory buildings contain workspaces, machine shops and demonstration rooms used in the development of electrical devices, recorded-sound experiments and other inventions. Glenmont houses period rooms that interpret Edison’s family life and the domestic context of his career.

Guided tours and exhibits present original tools, equipment and laboratory furnishings where practical experimentation and invention took place, giving insight into late 19th- and early 20th-century industrial research. Interpretive materials explain Edison’s processes, collaborators and the broader impact of his patented inventions.

The site reflects Edison’s long career as an inventor and entrepreneur; the laboratory complex was the setting for many of his later patents and commercial developments while Glenmont served as his family residence. Federal designation preserves both the technical and domestic elements of his legacy.

Located in West Orange in northern New Jersey, the park sits within the suburban landscape west of New York City and is reachable from regional highways and public transit corridors.
