Thespiae

Thespiae was an ancient Greek polis in Boeotia, in central Greece, known in antiquity for its cultic sites and civic role in the Classical period.

The city was an established Boeotian community through the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic eras. Thespiae is historically noted for its contribution of men who fought and remained at Thermopylae in 480 BC; the site later passed through Macedonian and Roman influence like other cities in the region.

The archaeological remains are next to the modern village of Thespies in Boeotia, central Greece; the site sits on inland, gently rolling terrain of the Boeotian plain.
