Theatre of Dionysus
Archaeological Site Ancient Athens theatre considered birthplace of Greek drama
On the south slope of the Acropolis, the Theatre of Dionysus displays stone seats and ruined stage buildings where Athenian plays premiered; visitors come for classical archaeology, inscriptions and views across the Agora.
The Theatre of Dionysus is an ancient Greek theatre on the south slope of the Acropolis in Athens, recognized as one of the earliest and most important theatres in classical Greece. Its origins date to the 6th century BCE and it became the main performance space for dramatic festivals in Athens.
The site preserves the circular orchestra, terraced seating and the foundations of the stage building, giving a clear sense of the layout used for classical tragedy and comedy. The theatre once held large audiences - estimates commonly cite capacity up to about 17,000 - and is interpreted as the principal venue for the City Dionysia festival.
Its position beneath the Acropolis makes it a key stop for people touring the Acropolis complex, with close views of the Parthenon and other monuments above.
Originally a wooden performance area from the 6th century BCE, the Theatre of Dionysus was enlarged and rebuilt in stone during the 4th century BCE and modified in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It served as the principal stage for Athenian drama and was associated with playwrights such as Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes.
The theatre sits on the southern slope of the Acropolis in central Athens, directly below the Parthenon and adjacent to other archaeological sites in the Acropolis precinct.
