The Rocks, New South Wales

The Rocks is a historic precinct on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour in central Sydney, containing cobbled streets, sandstone buildings, and a concentration of 18th- and 19th-century colonial-era fabric. It sits adjacent to Circular Quay and offers direct views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

Preserved terraces and cottages, heritage museums, pubs, and weekend markets that operate along the precinct’s main lanes. The area is a compact walking district with restaurants, galleries, and guided tours that explain its convict-era and early-colonial history.

Originally developed after the First Fleet arrived in 1788, the precinct evolved through maritime, residential, and industrial phases; 20th-century conservation efforts preserved many historic buildings and streetscapes for public visitation.

The Rocks lies on the western edge of Sydney’s central business district, immediately west of Circular Quay and easily accessible from the city centre.
