The Persian Caravanserai

This serial property comprises historic Persian caravanserais - roadside inns and complexes designed to shelter merchants, caravans and travelers across the Iranian plateau. The buildings represent traditional caravan architecture and logistics of pre-modern overland trade.

Examples show common architectural features: an enclosed courtyard, stables or storage rooms, and thick-walled rooms arranged around axial entrances to provide shelter and security. Many caravanserais survive as substantial masonry structures with vaulted iwans, guardrooms and gateways that reflect regional construction techniques. Travel to individual caravanserais typically involves visits to standalone rural sites, often reached from nearby towns or highways.

Caravanserais were built and adapted over many centuries to support long-distance trade routes, including the historic Silk Roads and regional commercial networks. Patrons ranged from local rulers to imperial administrations that maintained roadside infrastructure; the architecture evolved to meet the needs of merchants, animals and caravan logistics. Over time many caravanserais fell out of use with the decline of caravan trade but were later recognized for their historic and architectural value.

The caravanserais are distributed across Iran, in arid and semi-arid regions as well as along historic route corridors; each site sits near local settlements or travel routes within its province. Access and distances vary by site; some are close to major roads while others require travel on secondary routes.
