Main image

The Pearl Island, marketed as The Pearl-Qatar, is a reclaimed artificial island immediately off the coast of Doha in the municipality of Doha. It is a large mixed-use development combining residential neighbourhoods, retail streets, marinas and hospitality facilities.

The island is organized into distinct neighbourhoods and public marinas, with waterfront promenades, apartment towers and standalone villas. Key public-facing areas include a deep-water marina, a canal-style residential quarter and a central retail promenade used for dining and shopping.

The project was developed in phases by Qatar-based developers beginning in the early 2000s as part of Doha’s coastal expansion, with constructed districts opened progressively through the 2000s and 2010s. Planning emphasised waterfront living, private berths for yachts and high-end retail.

The Pearl sits just offshore from the northern end of Doha’s West Bay district and is linked to the city by road. It lies within Doha municipality and is readily reached by car or taxi from central Doha.

  • Development history: Developed in phases by United Development Company from the early 2000s, combining residential, retail, hotel and marina facilities.
  • Access: Connected to Doha by a causeway and public road network and served by private vehicle access and taxis.

How to Get to The Pearl Island #

The Pearl-Qatar is a man-made island just off the northern shore of Doha. By car or taxi from central Doha it takes about 20-30 minutes (roughly 15-25 km depending on start point); follow the coastal roads/expressways heading north from the Corniche and take the marked exits for The Pearl. Taxis (Karwa and private) and private cars are the usual means of reaching the island; there is street access and short walks from parking/kerbside to the marinas and shopping promenades.

Tips for Visiting The Pearl Island #

  • Visit late afternoon into evening - the heat eases, the marina lights come on and many restaurants are at their best; for cooler, quieter conditions choose a weekday rather than Friday or Saturday evenings when locals and tourists converge.
  • Don't limit yourself to the Porto Arabia marina - walk or take a short taxi to Qanat Quartier (the Venetian-style canal neighborhood) for colorful houses, quieter photo spots and canals that most day-visitors miss.
  • If you're arriving by car, aim for off-peak entry times (early morning or midafternoon) to avoid the busiest parking periods around the main promenades; parking is distributed across the island so try a secondary lot away from the central marina if the main area is full.
