The Lakes, Copenhagen
Monastery Series of central Copenhagen urban lakes and promenades
The Lakes trace a chain of three rectilinear urban ponds just west of Copenhagen’s city centre, used for walking, jogging, and people-watching, with bordering townhouses, cafés, and viewlines toward Rosenborg and the inner city.
The Lakes in Copenhagen are a linear sequence of three urban lakes that run along the western edge of the city centre. The group comprises Sortedams Sø, Peblinge Sø and Sankt Jørgens Sø and is a well known recreational area in the city.
Paths beside the lakes are used for walking, jogging and cycling, and the banks attract local recreation year round. The lakes are also a local spot for birdwatching and city views.
The lakes originated from medieval city waterworks and fortifications and have been adapted over centuries into the park and reservoir system visible today. Their current form is the result of urban development and landscaping.
They sit immediately west of Copenhagen’s historic inner city, forming a long green and blue belt that separates the central districts from residential neighborhoods to the west.

- Peblinge Sø: The central lake that sits between Sortedams Sø and Sankt Jørgens Sø and is a popular linear promenade for walkers and joggers.
