The Forth Bridge
Historical Site Iconic cantilever railway bridge spanning the Firth of Forth
A red‑painted late 19th‑century cantilever railway bridge spanning the Firth of Forth; engineers, photographers and rail passengers visit to study its scale, ironwork construction and significance in industrial‑era engineering.
The Forth Bridge is a red-painted steel cantilever railway bridge that spans the Firth of Forth, linking the north and south shores near Edinburgh. Construction was completed in 1890 and the structure is widely recognised as a landmark of large-scale Victorian engineering.
The bridge carries a busy rail route and offers dramatic views across the Firth of Forth; popular vantage points are the harbours and promenades at South Queensferry on the south side and North Queensferry on the north side. Walkers and photographers often use the adjacent coastal paths and viewpoints to frame the bridge against the estuary.
Engineered as a cantilever structure, it was designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker to provide a rigid, high-capacity crossing for rail traffic and has remained in continuous use since opening. Maintenance and paintwork have been important parts of its upkeep across the 20th and 21st centuries.
The bridge sits at the mouth of the River Forth, about 14 km north-west of central Edinburgh, connecting the towns of South Queensferry (Lothian) and North Queensferry (Fife). The modern road and rail crossings nearby provide additional transport links across the estuary.
- Completion date: Completed in 1890, it remains an icon of Victorian engineering and is painted in a distinctive red oxide colour.
What to See #
