The Battery is a small historic neighbourhood sited on the rocky headland at the entrance to St. John’s harbour in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is noted for its tightly clustered, brightly painted cottages and steep, narrow streets that cling to the hillside.

The area provides close-in views across the Narrows to Signal Hill and the harbour; its streets, stairs, and sea-facing houses are the principal attractions for visitors and photographers. The scale is compact so most points of interest are reachable on foot within a short walk.

The Battery developed as a fishing and small-boat community in the 18th and 19th centuries and retained its residential character through the 20th century. Many of the houses and stages reflect traditional fishermen’s architecture and the neighbourhood is regarded as one of the city’s historic quarters.

Geographically it sits on the southeastern side of the entrance to St. John’s harbour, about 3 kilometres southeast of downtown St. John’s, with direct sea access and views across the harbour mouth.

  • Best viewpoint: The headland and the narrow lanes offer the best views over the harbour entrance and are particularly photogenic at sunrise and early morning light.
