The Battery (Manhattan)

The Battery is the public park and waterfront area at the southern tip of Manhattan in New York City, historically a defensive battery and now a landscaped urban park with monuments and harbour views.

The site originated as a defensive battery in the colonial and early republic periods and later hosted entertainment and immigration-related uses; Castle Clinton served various public functions before becoming a protected historic monument. Over time the area evolved into a designed park with memorials added in the 20th century.

The Battery sits at Manhattan’s southernmost point, where the Hudson River meets New York Harbor, within walking distance of Wall Street and ferry terminals to Liberty Island and Staten Island.
