In Bagan, Thatbyinnyu is a tall, two-storey 12th-century temple notable for Buddha images, brick architecture and panoramic terrace views at sunrise and sunset within the temple plain.
Thatbyinnyu Temple is the tallest temple in the Bagan archaeological zone in central Myanmar and dates to the mid-12th century. It was built as a royal temple and is a two-storey, brick Buddhist temple known for its height among Bagan monuments.
Architecturally the temple combines a multi-storey shrine tower with interior sanctuaries on different levels; it houses Buddha images and offers access to upper terraces. Visitors commonly ascend internal stairways to reach elevated terraces for views over the plain.
The temple was constructed during the reign of King Alaungsithu in the 12th century and, like many Bagan monuments, has been damaged and repaired over time, including conservation work after earthquakes. It remains a major religious and historic site within the Bagan group.
Thatbyinnyu sits on the Bagan archaeological plain in Mandalay Region, central Myanmar, among hundreds of other pagodas and temples clustered around the Ayeyarwady River.
- Best viewpoint: Climbing the temple's upper terraces provides one of the best panoramic views across the Bagan plain and its surrounding temple groups, especially at sunrise and sunset.
