Archaeological Site Archaeological site of Phoenician-Roman Tharros ruins on Sardinia
The coastal ruins of Tharros on Sardinia’s Sinis peninsula span Phoenician, Punic and Roman layers; visitors walk sea‑front streets, Roman baths and a hilltop necropolis set against the western Mediterranean.
Tharros is an archaeological site on the Sinis peninsula of western Sardinia, consisting of Phoenician-Punic and Roman urban remains founded from around the 8th century BC. It is one of Sardinia’s principal ancient towns, with excavated streets, sanctuaries, necropoleis and harbour structures.
The visible remains include foundations of Punic and Roman houses, sections of paved streets, public buildings and thermal installations, together with several necropoleis and evidence of port activity. The site spans many centuries of occupation, so visitors can see material from the Phoenician foundation through the Roman imperial phase.
Tharros was established by Phoenician settlers in the first millennium BC, later developing under Punic and then Roman control. The town declined in the late antiquity and medieval periods and was eventually abandoned; modern excavations began in the 19th and 20th centuries and have revealed the multi-layered settlement.
Located on the Sinis peninsula near the modern town of Cabras on Sardinia’s west coast, Tharros sits on a low promontory overlooking the sea and lagoons of the Gulf of Oristano.
- Visitor practicals: Bring sun protection and water when visiting the exposed coastal site - archaeological areas are largely open air and can be hot in summer.
- Interpretation: Good archaeological interpretation panels are placed on site, but hiring a guide or using a detailed guidebook improves understanding of the multi-period layers.
What to See #
- Urban ruins: Main archaeological area with the remains of the Punic and Roman town grid, including street alignments, public buildings and residential blocks from the 8th century BC through the Roman period.
- Necropolis and tophet: Necropolis and tophet containing graves and ritual deposits dating to the Phoenician-Punic and Roman periods, discovered in multiple excavated cemeteries.
- Harbour and baths: Coastal installations and baths that demonstrate the site's role as a harbour and Roman settlement during the imperial period.

Tips for Visiting Tharros #
- Go at opening or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and to get the best light for photographing the stone ruins and the surrounding coastline.
