Thames Valley
Area Region surrounding the River Thames with historic towns
The Thames Valley refers to the river corridor west of London, noted for riverside towns, boating and riverside walks, plus access to historic houses and rowing activity.
The Thames Valley is the lowland corridor along the middle reaches of the River Thames in southern England, covering parts of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. It is an important cultural and economic region with historic towns, university centres and strong transport links into London.
The valley contains historic cities and towns such as Oxford and Windsor, riverside market towns like Henley-on-Thames, and many stately homes and gardens; common activities include boating, rowing and long riverside walks along towpaths. The area also features modern commercial centres around Reading and Slough with business parks and commuter services, making it a regional transport and economic hub.
Settled since prehistoric and Roman times, the valley developed through the medieval period with market towns, university foundations and royal sites shaping its cultural landscape. River transport, agriculture and later industrial and service economies have all influenced settlement patterns and land use over centuries.
Geographically the region follows the middle Thames from the upper reaches near Oxford eastward toward the outskirts of London, lying west and northwest of central London across a mix of river floodplain and adjacent hills.
- Henley Royal Regatta: Annual rowing event on the River Thames at Henley that draws international crews and large spectator bankside crowds in early summer.
- Eton College: Founded by King Henry VI in 1440, it is one of England's oldest and most widely known independent schools, located beside the river opposite Windsor.
What to See #
- Oxford: Home to the University of Oxford, whose colleges date back to the 12th century and form a major academic and architectural focus in the region.
- Windsor Castle: A Norman-origin royal residence beside the Thames with a medieval core that remains an official royal household site and public attraction.
- Henley-on-Thames: A riverside market town on the Thames that hosts rowing events and attracts visitors for regatta viewing and riverside promenades.
- Reading: A major commercial and transport centre in the valley with rail and road links into London and the West of England.
- Eton College: A historic boarding school founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, located on the Thames opposite Windsor and visited for its college architecture and chapel.
How to Get to Thames Valley #
The Thames Valley is best accessed by rail from London: trains run west from Paddington to Reading, Oxford and beyond. Major towns in the valley have good rail links; regional buses and rental cars provide access to smaller villages and riverside towpaths. Driving along the A4 and A40 gives access to many historic towns and river viewpoints.
