How to Get to Loei
Loei is served by a small regional airport (Loei Airport, LOE) with sparse domestic flights and by overland bus connections to larger hubs. For more frequent flight options use Udon Thani International Airport (UTH) and continue by road to Loei.
Loei Airport (LOE): Small regional airport with limited domestic services (typically flights to/from Bangkok). Flight time from Bangkok ~1 hour. From Loei Airport to Loei town centre you can take a metered taxi (about 150-300 THB, 15-25 minutes) or a motorcycle taxi for less; there is no regular airport shuttle.
Udon Thani International Airport (UTH): Udon Thani is the nearest major airport with more frequent domestic connections and some international flights. Road transfer from Udon Thani to Loei by bus or private taxi takes roughly 2.5-3.5 hours; expect a private taxi to be several hundred to a few thousand THB depending on vehicle and negotiation.
Train: Loei does not have frequent long-distance State Railway of Thailand services comparable to major hubs; the nearest major SRT hub is Udon Thani Railway Station. If you plan to use rail, travel to Udon Thani by train from Bangkok (overnight/day services) then continue by road to Loei (bus or taxi), road transfer ~2.5-3.5 hours.
Bus: Buses and minibuses are the most common way to reach Loei. Intercity buses run from Bangkok (Mo Chit/Northern Bus Terminal) to Loei in about 7-9 hours; ticket prices typically range 300-700 THB depending on class (standard to VIP). Local songthaews and taxis serve internal trips within Loei.
How to Get Around Loei #
Loei’s downtown is compact and easy to walk - much of the city centre can be explored on foot. For longer trips you’ll find songthaews (shared pickup taxis), motorcycle taxis and the occasional tuk‑tuk; short local rides typically run in the tens of Thai baht. There are regular intercity buses from the main bus station to nearby towns (Chiang Khan, Udon Thani) and motorbike rental is common for day trips to surrounding viewpoints (daily rental rates vary).
