How to Get to Loei

Loei is served by a small regional airport (Loei Airport, LOE) with sparse domestic flights and by overland bus connections to larger hubs. For more frequent flight options use Udon Thani International Airport (UTH) and continue by road to Loei.

By Air

Loei Airport (LOE): Small regional airport with limited domestic services (typically flights to/from Bangkok). Flight time from Bangkok ~1 hour. From Loei Airport to Loei town centre you can take a metered taxi (about 150-300 THB, 15-25 minutes) or a motorcycle taxi for less; there is no regular airport shuttle.

Udon Thani International Airport (UTH): Udon Thani is the nearest major airport with more frequent domestic connections and some international flights. Road transfer from Udon Thani to Loei by bus or private taxi takes roughly 2.5-3.5 hours; expect a private taxi to be several hundred to a few thousand THB depending on vehicle and negotiation.

By Train & Bus

Train: Loei does not have frequent long-distance State Railway of Thailand services comparable to major hubs; the nearest major SRT hub is Udon Thani Railway Station. If you plan to use rail, travel to Udon Thani by train from Bangkok (overnight/day services) then continue by road to Loei (bus or taxi), road transfer ~2.5-3.5 hours.

Bus: Buses and minibuses are the most common way to reach Loei. Intercity buses run from Bangkok (Mo Chit/Northern Bus Terminal) to Loei in about 7-9 hours; ticket prices typically range 300-700 THB depending on class (standard to VIP). Local songthaews and taxis serve internal trips within Loei.

How to Get Around Loei #

Loei’s downtown is compact and easy to walk - much of the city centre can be explored on foot. For longer trips you’ll find songthaews (shared pickup taxis), motorcycle taxis and the occasional tuk‑tuk; short local rides typically run in the tens of Thai baht. There are regular intercity buses from the main bus station to nearby towns (Chiang Khan, Udon Thani) and motorbike rental is common for day trips to surrounding viewpoints (daily rental rates vary). Carry cash and ask drivers for a rough fare before you hop on.

Nightlife in Loei #

Nightlife in Loei is relaxed and unpretentious. Evenings are mostly about casual eateries, street food and a handful of small bars; things wind down earlier than in Thailand’s bigger cities. There are also modest night markets and riverside eating spots at weekends, but don’t expect a big bar or club scene.

Shopping in Loei #

Shopping is low‑key and practical: a central fresh market handles most produce and daily needs, and small shops line the main roads. You’ll find local food stalls, simple clothing shops and some vendors selling regional products. For crafts and souvenirs expect limited choices in town - nearby weekend markets and villages are better if you’re after local handicrafts.
