Teurnia

Teurnia is an archaeological site in Carinthia that preserves the remains of a Roman and late-antique town which later became a regional episcopal centre. It is known from inscriptions and excavations as a local administrative and religious centre in late antiquity.

Excavations have uncovered urban layouts, public buildings and a basilica associated with the town’s Christian community, reflecting its role as a local bishopric and administrative centre in the later Roman period. Finds from the site illustrate continuity from Roman urban infrastructure into the early medieval era.

The site lies in the alpine-foothill region of Carinthia in southern Austria, within the broader Zollfeld plain area and reachable from nearby towns in the district.
