Teuhtli volcano
Volcano Volcano and hiking area on Mexico City's outskirts
Teuhtli is a volcanic cone on the southern edge of the Mexico City basin and is one of the many volcanic features that make up the Chichinautzin volcanic field. It is a noticeable hill in the city’s southern highlands.
The volcano presents forested slopes and natural terrain typical of the outer ring of cones around the valley, and it is visited by people interested in geology, hiking and local nature. Trails and informal routes lead up parts of the cone where access is permitted.
Teuhtli formed as part of the region’s volcanic activity in the Pleistocene-Holocene period and is one of a cluster of monogenetic cones and lava flows that define the Chichinautzin field. The volcanic landscape around Mexico City developed over tens of thousands of years through repeated strombolian and effusive eruptions.
The cone stands on the southern flank of the Valley of Mexico, on the higher ground that borders Mexico City to the south-southwest, within the greater metropolitan area.
