Teshima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea within Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, known for contemporary art projects and small-scale rural communities. The island became internationally known after the installation of island-specific art works in the 2000s and the opening of a major museum in 2010.

The main attractions are site-specific contemporary artworks set into the island landscape, walking routes and the Teshima Art Museum - an architectural work in its own right. Visitors also encounter farmland, shorelines and small residential settlements rather than dense tourist development.

Historically a fishing and agricultural community, Teshima was part of the late 20th- and early 21st-century Setouchi art initiatives that transformed several islands in the Seto Inland Sea into venues for contemporary art. The Teshima Art Museum opened in 2010 as a focal point for that work.

The island lies in the Seto Inland Sea between Honshu and Shikoku and is administered as part of Kagawa Prefecture; it is reached by regular ferries from mainland ports such as Uno and Takamatsu.

  • Getting there: Ferries connect Teshima with ports such as Uno and Takamatsu; timetables vary seasonally so check connections before travel.
  • Character: The island combines contemporary art projects with rural landscapes and small fishing villages rather than large tourist infrastructure.

What to See #

  • Teshima Art Museum: Designed by artist Rei Naito with architect Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA) and opened in 2010, the building is a single low concrete shell with organic openings and a sparse interior where visitors experience a site-specific installation.

How to Get to Teshima #

Ferry + short walk: Teshima is served by ferries from Takamatsu (Kagawa) and from Uno (Okayama). From JR Takamatsu Station it is about a 10-15 minute walk to Takamatsu Port where ferries to Teshima depart; from Okayama take the JR Uno Line to Uno Station and walk a few minutes to Uno Port to catch a ferry. Ferry crossings vary by route (often in the range of ~20-45 minutes depending on departure point).

On arrival at Teshima Ferry Terminal most art sites and accommodations are within a 10-30 minute walk or a short bicycle ride; bicycle rental is commonly available on the island for getting between ports and exhibition sites.

Tips for Visiting Teshima #

  • Book timed-entry tickets for Teshima Art Museum in advance and arrive with the earliest ferry to avoid midday crowds inside the small, capacity-controlled museum.
  • Rent a bicycle at the port on arrival-Teshima is compact and a bike lets you reach scattered outdoor installations, local farms and small cafés faster than on foot.
  • Plan travel around the ferry schedule (few sailings compared with larger islands) and check return times before exploring inland so you don't miss the last boat back.
