Terra Nova National Park
National Park Coastal park protecting boreal forests and seabird colonies
On Newfoundland’s east coast, Terra Nova National Park combines boreal forest, coastal bays and rocky headlands; visitors camp, kayak in sheltered inlets, and follow trails for moose and seabird sightings.
Terra Nova National Park is a protected area on the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, established in the mid-20th century to conserve coastal, forest and barrens habitats. The park covers a substantial area of boreal forest, coastal inlets and freshwater systems and offers outdoor recreation.
Visitors use a network of marked hiking trails, backcountry campsites and water routes to explore coastal inlets, bogs and forested ridges; boat and canoe access to coastal ponds and inlets is popular in season. Facilities at park entrances provide orientation and support for day-use and overnight visitors.
The park was created to preserve representative Newfoundland landscapes and wildlife and to provide public access to outdoor recreation. Management focuses on habitat conservation alongside visitor services and trail maintenance.
Terra Nova National Park lies on the east coast of Newfoundland, facing Bonavista Bay and adjacent to small coastal communities. It is located inland from the coastal highway corridor and is reachable by road from larger centres on the island.
- Conditions to plan for: Park roads and trails can be wet and muddy in spring and fall; waterproof footwear and insect repellent are advised in summer.
- Wildlife viewing: Wildlife commonly observed includes moose and a variety of coastal and forest birds; organised boat cruises operate from nearby communities in season.
What to See #
- Coastal inlets and ponds: Coastal inlets, bogs and pond systems that provide habitat for waterfowl and marine life and are the focus of many park trails.
- Trails and campsites: Marked hiking trails and backcountry campsites used for day hikes and multi-day routes through boreal forest and coastal barrens.
- Visitor facilities: Small visitor facilities near park entrances that provide maps and basic orientation for wildlife viewing and trail access.
How to Get to Terra Nova National Park #
Terra Nova National Park is on Newfoundland’s east coast and is reached by road from St. John’s and other towns on the island. From St. John’s take the Trans‑Canada Highway (Route 1) westbound toward Clarenville/Gander and follow the park access signs - the drive from St. John’s is commonly done in about 1.5-2 hours by car (check current driving times).
The park has designated trailheads and parking areas along the parkways; public transit is limited, so most visitors arrive by private vehicle or tour.
Tips for Visiting Terra Nova National Park #
- Book campsites or rental cabins well in advance for summer - the park is a popular provincial destination and spaces fill early on weekends.
- Plan morning outings for wildlife viewing (moose and birdlife are most active at dawn) and paddle or canoe on quieter ponds before day users arrive.
- Explore some of the less-trafficked backcountry trails rather than only the main loops to find solitude and better opportunities for lakeside viewpoints; check park trail maps at the visitor centre for trail conditions.
