Terqa is an archaeological tell on the middle Euphrates in eastern Syria, identified with the modern mound Tell Ashara. It was an important urban centre and regional seat during the Bronze and Iron Age periods.
Excavations at the tell have revealed palace and temple remains, administrative buildings and cuneiform inscriptions that document the city’s role in local political networks. Finds from the site span multiple centuries of occupation and demonstrate its long-term importance along the Euphrates.
The city served as a local political and economic centre in antiquity, with archaeological layers reflecting changing control and cultural influences across the second and first millennia BC. Archaeological work at the tell has focused on stratigraphy and recovered administrative texts and architectural complexes.
Terqa sits on the Euphrates floodplain in Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria; the mound lies close to the river and to modern settlements along the Euphrates. The site is part of the broader archaeological landscape of the middle Euphrates valley.
