Tern Island (Hawaii)

Tern Island is a small coral island in the French Frigate Shoals, part of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and included in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. It has served as a logistical base for research and resource management in the remote shoals.

On the island are remnants of support facilities historically used for research, Coast Guard operations and air landings; the location is noted for seabird colonies and for marine life in surrounding reef waters. Because the island is remote and managed for conservation, visits are infrequent and typically organized by government or scientific teams rather than general tourism.

The island was developed in the 20th century to support aviation and stationing for government operations and later became a focus for conservation work and scientific monitoring. Over time facilities have been reduced and some infrastructure has deteriorated as management shifted toward habitat protection and research logistics.

Tern Island sits within the French Frigate Shoals at the northwest end of the main Hawaiian island chain. It is remote from the main Hawaiian Islands and is reached only by specialized vessels or aircraft operating under permit from managing agencies.
