Terminal Island
Island Industrial Los Angeles island serving port facilities
An industrial island in Los Angeles Harbor between San Pedro and Long Beach, Terminal Island hosts port facilities and restricted areas; visitors encounter harbor tours, fishing charters and maritime history in nearby ports.
Terminal Island is an island in San Pedro Bay, Los Angeles County, California, located between the cities of Los Angeles (San Pedro) and Long Beach. The island is primarily used for port, industrial and maritime activities and forms part of the greater Los Angeles-Long Beach harbour complex.
The shoreline and quays on Terminal Island host cargo terminals, shipyards and related industrial infrastructure that serve the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The island also contains institutional facilities including a federal correctional complex.
Development accelerated in the early 20th century when shipbuilding and port facilities expanded; before World War II the island had a fishing and small residential community, including a Japanese-American population that was removed during wartime internment. The island has since remained focused on maritime industry and port support.
Terminal Island sits in San Pedro Bay off the Southern California coast, connected to the mainland by road bridges including the Vincent Thomas Bridge to San Pedro and road links toward Long Beach and the harbor.
- Best viewpoints: Best public viewpoints of the island and its port operations are from the waterfronts of San Pedro and Long Beach and from the Vincent Thomas Bridge.
- Access and use: Vehicle access is limited and much of the island is occupied by port, industrial and institutional facilities rather than public amenities.
What to See #
- Port and industrial facilities: An active area of port operations and industrial terminals forming part of the Los Angeles and Long Beach harbour complex, handling cargo and ship services.
- Federal Correctional Institution: A federal low-security correctional complex located on the island, historically known as Terminal Island Federal Correctional Institution.
How to Get to Terminal Island #
Terminal Island is connected by freeway via State Route 47 (Terminal Island Freeway) from Long Beach and from the east via CA-103. From San Pedro, the Vincent Thomas Bridge provides access. Public transit options are limited; driving is the usual way to reach viewpoints. Parking and pedestrian access are better on the Long Beach and San Pedro sides than on the island itself.
Tips for Visiting Terminal Island #
- Access to much of Terminal Island is restricted due to industrial and port operations; do not attempt to enter fenced areas or private yards.
- For a maritime viewpoint of the island and its shipping activity, take the Alamitos Bay/Long Beach waterfront or the Cabrillo Marina area in San Pedro for photos.
- If exploring the broader area, use the Anaheim/Terminal Island Freeway (SR-47) but expect heavy truck traffic and no pedestrian infrastructure on many stretches.
- Be aware of the island's complex history - from wartime industries to shipyards and its use in WWII-era Japanese American incarceration narratives - and treat sensitive sites respectfully.
