Termessos

Termessos is an ancient Pisidian city located in the Taurus Mountains of Antalya Province, Turkey, known for its dramatic mountain-top setting and well-preserved ruins. The site sits on a high rocky spur above the surrounding plain and is often cited for its preservation and defensive position.

The archaeological remains include a hillside theater, multiple necropoleis, city walls and temple foundations set among steep limestone terraces. Many ruins retain clear architectural elements and the theater affords extensive views across the valleys below.

The city was inhabited in the Hellenistic period and continued into the Roman era; it was an independent mountain community that resisted outside rulers in antiquity. Historical accounts record that Alexander the Great did not take the city during his Anatolian campaign.

Termessos lies within Antalya Province on the western slopes of the Taurus range, northwest of the city of Antalya. The site occupies a high, rocky position above the surrounding countryside and is accessed by mountain roads and footpaths.
